What defines the main difference within the political divide in society today? Many say it is a struggle between the LEFT and the RIGHT, the HAVES versus the HAVE NOTS! Or the RICH versus the POOR. America today is ideologically divided and it is important for Americans to understand what divides us. We need to know, what the difference really is and if it important to “get it Right?” We need to know what it means to us individually and as a nation. We also need to understand how these beliefs work with our nation’s Constitution and the driving forces that have made America the greatest and most “free” nation on earth!
The difference is, INDIVIDUALISM versus COLLECTIVISM! One is inherently focused on individual freedom, while the other discounts individual freedoms for the benefit of the “collective” e.g. community, government, union, or demographic/ethnic groups. Racial quotas are a collective principle, as are unions. A personal freedom would be a “Right to Work State.” Contrast that with a Union “Closed shop State” where you are required to join a union and pay them a fee to work! Another Collective principle is “Eminent Domain” where Government can take away your personal freedom and property for the benefit of the collective (community.) It doesn’t matter that you bought it, raised your family there, they can TAKE your home and pay you what THEY think it is worth! The Patriot Act, which was instituted allegedly to protect our freedom and safety after 9-11 actually took away freedoms. Specifically the right to privacy in many areas of our lives. The Free Market (free enterprise) is a product of individualism. With nothing but hard work, skill and luck ANYONE can achieve whatever their “enterprise” can create.
People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both! – Benjamin Franklin
America was founded around the concept of freedom: That man should have FREEDOM, PERSONAL LIBERTY and it should be PROTECTED FROM GOVERNMENT! The concept holds that man was created with “UNALIENABLE” rights. Those being Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness! Those rights, according to our Founders were endowed by our Creator. That means they cannot be taken away by, nor were created by man (i.e. Government.) They are by their very essence, Individual in nature. You have the right to ”life”, you have the “Liberty” to choose what you do. And, you have the right to self-determination and the “Pursuit of Happiness.” That is the FOUNDATION of our Country! In essence, the pillars on which our nation was formed. Without them we are in trouble! While those concepts were intended to protect individual freedom, there are limits. For example, you don’t have the right to yell “fire” in a crowded theater. In essence, your rights have the limitation that they cannot “infringe” on the rights of someone else. All this means, that you have the OPPORTUNITY in America to make for yourself whatever your knowledge, drive, risk taking and hard work can achieve. It also makes us somewhat unique in the world! That is why, throughout history, people have risked their lives to come here.
“Collectivism” attempts to see a group of individuals as having a single identity similar to a person. The collective or group’s rights trump the rights of the individual. They believe that your “unalienable rights” in fact aren’t that at all! They are subordinate to the rights of the collective! This is the essence of SOCIALISM! “Power to the People” a Marxist/Communist rallying cry, is all about that. Power to the GROUP, not to you. However, collectivist systems are LED by individuals who view themselves as ELITES! They simply are smarter than you and understand that you need to be led for your own good! The irony, is that they see themselves very much as INDIVIDUALS!
“collectivist ethical principle: man is not an end to himself, but is only a tool to serve the ends of others. Whether those ‘others’ are a dictator’s gang, the nation, society, the race, (the) god(s), the majority, the community, the tribe, etc., is irrelevant — the point is that man in principle must be sacrificed to others.” — Mark Da Cunha
So our choice is pretty clear. While you don’t hear the term Communism used much anymore, this is Marxism straight up! The fact that
“Liberal/Progressives” put such limited value in literalness of TRUTH should be an indication to everyone that something is amiss! Progressives are relativist, they believe truth is fleeting and relative to varying circumstances. Truth is in fact, the only absolute we have. Without it nothing works. Certainly the rule of law doesn’t. It becomes the Theory of Law! The Constitution becomes an old parchment written by men with wooden teeth.
“Politics is the business of getting power and privilege without possessing merit. A politician is anyone who asks individuals to surrender part of their liberty — their power and privilege — to State, Masses, Mankind, Planet Earth, or whatever. This state, those masses, that mankind, and the planet will then be run by … politicians.” — P. J. O’Rourke
We have a pretty clear alternative before us. I hope we all think it through and get it right.
“Don’t believe them, don’t fear them, don’t ask anything of them.” A. Solzhenitsyn
